The UK pub poker circuit has brought the game of poker to the average man in the street.

Rebranded as a low-risk, low stakes and high-entertainment game, pub poker has taken off across the UK.

The Nuts Poker League was launched with the help of £60,000 given by the BBC’s Dragon Den. Entrepreneur Steve Bellis won the cash investment on the show where contestants pitch their business ideas to a team of venture capitalists who then pick the ones with the most potential to invest in.

In Scotland, over 80 pubs have joined the game, with weekly poker nights.

Bets are capped at £5 and the top prize on offer is £100 – not bad for a night out at the local pub. The aim of this low stakes version is that everyone can participate without the danger of getting in too deep.

You don’t have to be an expert to join the league, in fact it’s the perfect place for beginners to learn the ropes, whilst having a chance to win some money.

The pub poker league is very sociable, and a great way to meet new people, one of the reasons this idea has grown so quickly.

Each player puts £5 in the pot, and the total is divided up by the winners.

The poker games are good news for pubs, bringing in business on typically quiet weekday nights.

It seems that pub poker is replacing the great British institution of the pub quiz, where locals get into teams to answer trivia questions, to win a cash prize. It is not surprising that this new activity has inspired so many Brits, since poker as a global phenomenon is on the rise.
